Pune/Pimpri-Chinchwad: A significant political development is unfolding in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. To tackle growing restlessness within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) at the local level in the absence of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, senior NCP leader Jay Pawar has stepped in directly.

Jay Pawar held a key review meeting with former corporators and corporators of the Pune Municipal Corporation and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. This move has triggered speculation that the leadership of NCP in Pune may now shift into Jay Pawar’s hands.

What Happened in the Meeting?

In the meeting chaired by Jay Pawar, a detailed review of local issues was conducted. The discussion focused primarily on the progress of development works in various wards, pending projects, and citizens’ expectations. Jay Pawar held direct discussions with the corporators on strengthening the party organization and gave them clear instructions for future planning.

Unease Among Local Leaders

For some time, local NCP leaders and corporators have been experiencing confusion and discontent. There is uncertainty about whom to approach with their grievances. Although the party is part of the ruling alliance at the state level, there is no clear local strategy on how to deal with the BJP, which is trying to establish dominance in Pune, while simultaneously protecting NCP’s own identity.

Meanwhile, MP Parth Pawar has been actively monitoring developments in Pune. However, some of his stands have reportedly created a situation where the NCP is seen as following the BJP’s decisions. Instances where the party initially opposed BJP proposals only to later support them after instructions from the top leadership have caused frustration among workers. Local leaders had been demanding regular meetings with either Sunetra Pawar or Parth Pawar. It is in this backdrop that Jay Pawar has taken the initiative.

By directly intervening and engaging with corporators and office-bearers, Jay Pawar appears to be attempting to shake off the current inertia and internal confusion. This has intensified speculation whether he is now set to take complete charge of NCP’s affairs in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
